David R. Shoop

Veteran

David Shoop is the founder of Shoop | A Professional Law Corporation, a nationally recognized California law firm devoted exclusively to representing individuals and families harmed by defective products, medical devices and catastrophic injuries. Over the course of his legal career, David Shoop has secured more than half a billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients, including a $100-million-dollar medical device settlement.

David has also obtained numerous multi-million-dollar verdicts, including a landmark California product liability and wrongful death case that resulted in a $30 million jury verdict for the minor children of the decedent who was killed in a rock crusher machine (Case No. BC594187). The verdict was unanimously affirmed by a California state appeals court. David further secured a $54 million series of product liability settlements and significant recoveries involving recalled medical devices, burn injuries, catastrophic orthopedic injuries and wrongful death claims.

David resolved another matter for over $6 million at a jury trial in a complex orthopedic injury case involving an equipment rollover in Los Angeles. He additionally secured a burn injury settlement of $3.5 million in Merced, California resulting from a house fire, and a seven-figure judgment against Wal-Mart, Worthington Cylinder Corporation and the Coleman Company in federal court in San Francisco due to a defective product. In addition to his burn injury, product liability and medical device case recoveries, David Shoop also obtained a $5,036,489 jury verdict in Riverside, California (Case Number INC 1109263) against Peerless Insurance, a Liberty Mutual Company, for insurance bad faith. The verdict included an award of $3,500,000 in punitive damages against Peerless Insurance. The case serves as a major precedent in California insurance law regarding business claims. It underscores the legal obligation of insurance carriers to conduct prompt and thorough investigations and highlights the severe financial penalties insurance companies can face for delaying payment and stands as one of the largest such first-party verdicts in the history of the County.

David Shoop is widely recognized for litigating technically complex cases requiring expertise in engineering, biomechanics, human factors, accident reconstruction, fire cause and origin analysis, medical causation and damages. Before founding SHOOP | APLC, David defended major corporations and their insurers in high-exposure litigation, providing him with a unique understanding of how manufacturers evaluate, defend and resolve catastrophic injury cases. Today, he puts that knowledge to effective use in exclusively representing injured individuals and their families.

Among his recent appellate achievements, David served as counsel in Beavan v. Allergan (Case No. A-53-24 090150), wherein the Supreme Court of New Jersey’s unanimous opinion clarified important standards governing expert testimony and medical causation in complex product liability litigation. The opinion represents a significant appellate victory for plaintiffs throughout New Jersey and the country.

Throughout his career, David has represented clients nationwide in matters involving defective medical devices, consumer products, motor vehicles, industrial machinery and catastrophic injury cases. These matters have included traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, severe burn injuries and wrongful death claims. He has extensive experience working with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), FDA-regulated medical devices and nationwide, coordinated litigation.

David Shoop earned his Juris Doctor from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law after serving honorably on active duty in the United States Army. He received his bachelor's degree, magna cum laude and Phi Kappa Phi, from Wright State University, where he was honored as the 2026 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the College of Liberal Arts in recognition of his professional achievements and service to students.

Licensed in numerous federal and state courts throughout the United States, David continues to represent clients in some of the country's most challenging product liability and medical device cases with the tenacity, preparation, technical knowledge and courtroom experience that have defined his career.
