Master Herbs Inc., a Los Angeles-based distributor of concentrated Chinese herbs and other herbal supplements, has recalled a cough syrup that was found to contain morphine. The licorice-flavored cough syrup was sold primarily through Chinese grocery stores in the following states:
- California
- New Jersey
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Ohio
- Nevada
The opioid was not listed on the label of the product, and as a result many users were likely unaware that they were ingesting the powerful drug. Master Herbs is recalling all lots of the product, labeled as either “Licorice Coughing Liquid” or with the Chinese Product Name:
The manufacturer complied with the FDA’s voluntary recall suggestion, and are actively contacting distributors and customers who may be in possession of the syrup.
Potentially Dangerous Side-Effects
Morphine is considered to be one of the most powerful opioid pain relievers, and is known to cause a variety of adverse reactions. Those with opioid sensitivity or allergies are quite vulnerable, as are adults and young children with respiratory issues. Accidental ingestion of morphine can cause, among others:
- Severe allergic reactions
- Respiratory depression
- Itching
- Rash
