DePuy ASR Hip Implant Device
These DePuy ASR hip replacements which are presently subject to the Depuy Hip recall are the ASR Hip Resurfacing System as well as the ASR XL Acetabular System. DePuy ASR implant devices have been used in patients within the United States Since 2005.
If you have recently been provided with a hip implant procedure replacing one or both hips with the DePuy ASR hip replacement device, and the device is now failing, you should contact a skilled Los Angeles product liability attorney at Shoop | A Professional Law Corporation immediately, as statutes of limitation begun to run upon discovery of device failure.
Revision Surgery Involving the DePuy ASR Devices

Unfortunately, an unacceptable number of DePuy ASR recall patients have required and undergone a very painful surgery known as 'revision surgery' due to this devastating pain they experience when the implant fails. This potentially risky revision surgery removes and replaces the failed DePuy ASR device and replace it with a properly functioning device.
DePuy has stated that it expects nearly 10,000 patients will require revision surgery yet, this seems to be a significant underestimation, as the device is prone to an unprecedented and unacceptable failure rate for hip replacement implant components. Allegations regarding the device include radiologic confirmation tending to demonstrate that the DePuy ASR device was failing because it was loosening or separating from the bone, rather than fusing to it, causing patients such severe and crippling pain while the metal cup moved about the hip socket and rubbed against the bone.
Moreover, the DePuy ASR revisions surgeries are necessary because the device is defectively designed and manufactured such that that unacceptable amounts of metal ions are released from the Depuy ASR hip device, thus causing Metallosis, or an increased building up of metallic debris in the soft tissues of the body. This may happen shortly after the DePuy ASR hip replacement is implanted into the body or it may take years for device failure to occur.
The problems and symptoms associated the DePuy ASR hip replacement device are categorized by multiple symptoms which include, but are not limited to:
- Fractures
- Infectious process
- Noises emanating from implant such as popping or crunching sounds
- Sensation that the hip is not "in place"
- Inability to perform physical activity
- A marked increase in metabolic activity in the implant area
- Dislocation and/or popping free from joint
- Pain and swelling in the hip, groin, leg, or lower back
- Metallosis (increased building up of metallic debris in the soft tissues of the body)
- Heightened levels of metal in the bloodstream
The DePuy ASR Hip Issues Were Known For Years
Prior to the DePuy hip recall of the ASR hip systems, published articles detailed the design-related issues with this implant device. Several hundreds of Adverse Event Reports to the FDA Maude Database in the United States confirmed what the studies clearly demonstrated - that the DePuy ASR cups have a propensity to become "loose" and its very design causes metal ions to be released into the bloodstream which, in turn, can cause bone erosion in some patients due to the body's production of excess osteoclasts, which are a type of bone cell that breaks down the cells that make up actual bone. The osteoclasts attack the metal debris, and additionally attack the healthy bone tissue that surround the implant.
Compensation
Depuy ASR hip replacement patients could be eligible for compensation as a result of the injuries they have suffered upon being implanted with the defective DePuy ASR hip replacement. These damages include, but are not limited to:
- Past and future pain and suffering;
- Reimbursement for related medical costs;
- Payment of lost earnings;
- Loss of Consortium (spousal); and
- Exemplary damages to deter this type of activity from occurring in the future.
