IKEA RECALL LAWYER

The product liability lawyers at Shoop | A Professional Law Corporation remind consumers of a significant product recall involving over 29 million units of IKEA furniture.

IKEA North America is instituting thIs massive product recall in cooperation and in conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC"). The recall involves all IKEA chests and dressers that do not comply with the performance requirements of industry standard ASTM F2057-14.

WHO WE ARE

The product liability lawyers at Shoop | A Professional Law Corporation have successfully represented clients both nationally and internationally in cases involving defective products and have recovered millions upon millions of dollars.

There is no law firm more passionate about removing defective products from the marketplace than us - particularly those products marketed to and/or particularly injurious to children.

THE RECALLED PRODUCT

These IKEA children’s and adult chests and dressers have associated product defects of instability. More specifically, these chests and dressers are unstable if they are not anchored to a wall, thereby posing a very real tip-over and/or entrapment hazard for children that could cause traumatic injury or death.

Approximately eight (8) million MALM chests and dressers and another twenty-one (21) million additional children’s chests and dressers in the U.S.

The nearly 30 million units of recalled chests and dressers include the following models:

  • MALM 3-drawer;
  • MALM 4-drawer;
  • MALM 5-drawer; and
  • MALM three 6-drawer models and other such children’s and adult chests and dressers.

By way of background, in July of 2015, IKEA announced a repair program (not a formal, product recall) for these unstable, chests and dressers. The attempted "repair" included a wall-anchor kit for these various MALM chests and dressers and other such unstable IKEA chests and dressers.

Tragically, two (2) separate fatalities involving these MALM chests and dressers occurred prior to the repair program:

  • In February of 2014, a two-year-old child in Pennsylvania died after a six-drawer MALM chest fell over, pinning the child fatally against his bed; and
  • In June of 2014, another two-year old died after he became entrapped beneath his three-drawer MALM chest, which also tipped over.

After the IKEA "repair" attempt in July of 2015 IKEA was made additionally aware of numerous other such tip-over events involving the furniture (more formally identified by model number, below). These additional such tip-over incidents, included a 2016 incident where a 22-month-old child in Minnesota died when a MALM six-drawer chest fell over on him.

Moreover, in addition to the three fatalities referenced above, IKEA also received reports of forty-one (41) tip-over events involving these MALM chests and dressers which caused seventeen (17) injuries to children between the ages of 19 months and 10 years old.

The recalled MALM chests were sold at retail during the time period 2002 through June 2016. They retailed for price points ranging from between $70 and $200.
