Product News From The Consumer Product Safety Commission

Since 1972, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has been dedicated to protecting consumers who were injured as the result of a defective product. They also work to prevent these injuries from occurring by issuing product recalls and warnings. This government agency has been given full authority to regulate the manufacture and sale of over 15,000 products on the market. By periodically checking their website, you can stay up-to-date regarding potential hazards and known risks.

One such warning they recently issued was in regards to a crib. The Generation 2 Worldwide "SafetyCraft" crib was discovered to pose the risk of strangulation and suffocation. These risks are not uncommon in cribs, as children can become trapped in the drop-down side of the crib and be strangled. Due to these risks, owners are strongly urged to immediately cease using these cribs. Fixing the crib is not enough, an alternative must be found. This is not the first time this company had to recall their cribs. In February of 2010, the Generation 2 Worldwide ChildESIGNS drop-side crib also had to be recalled for similar reasons.

Confusion may occur regarding these cribs because the original company ceased operations and their trademark was bought by the Foundations Children's Products of Medina, Ohio. These new cribs have not been recalled, so parents can determine what crib they have by looking at the assembly instructions. Another complication caused by the fact that the original company closed down is that the CPSC was limited in the amount of information they were able to secure. It is known, however, that the plastic latch on the crib's drop side can break, causing a space to be formed in which the infant could become trapped.
