Did you know: National Fire Prevention Week is right now, October 9th through the 15th

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and NFPA Urge Consumers to Install Smoke Alarms, as well as Practice a Family Escape Plan from the Home...

CPSC has estimated there is an annual average of more than 386,000 (unintentional) residential fires, resulting in nearly 2,400 deaths and more the 12,500 injuries each year - these estimates are from statistics derived from 2006-2008"Build layers of fire safety in your home," said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. "Install smoke alarms on every floor and in every bedroom. If you already have smoke alarms, make sure they are working. Smoke alarms provide early warning of a potentially deadly fire and can reduce the risk of dying from fire in your home by almost half."

Always remember to implement safe practices in your home or business, such as the following:

Install Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms should be installed in each floor of the home or business, outside (sleeping areas and inside bedrooms, included). Roughly two of every three burn injury deaths occur in homes/offices with no smoke alarms or alarms that are non-functional.

Have an Escape Plan
Developing and practicing a fire escape plan is essential. Make sure people understand how to escape when the smoke alarm activates.

Heating and Cooling Equipment
These devices accounted for the second largest percentage of home fires from 2006-2008. The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates an annual average of nearly 57,000 fires and 220 deaths during that time period.

Electrical Safety
CPSC estimates annual averages of 150 deaths from 2006 through 2008 directly attributable to electrical components.

Pourable Gel Fuels
CPSC has recalled millions of bottles of gel fuel due to burn and flash-fire hazards. The attorneys at SHOOP | A PROFESSIONAL LAW CORPORATION have written multiple blog entries on this subject here:

The pourable gel fuel can ignite unexpectedly and splatter onto people and objects nearby when it is poured into a firepot that is still burning. There have been multiple deaths associated with pourable gel fuel.

Attorney David Shoop has prepared numerous presentations and lectures on NFPA 921 standards application and fire cause and origin analysis and has years of experience litigating fire-related damages cases.
