Defective Product Fire Hazards

Defective Product Fire Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced, in cooperation with John Deere, a product recall regarding its Lawn Tractors Powered by Kawasaki Engines. The product defects associated with the hazard causes engine overheating and resulting residential and commercial fires.

CPSC advises all consumers to stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed, and notes further that reselling a recalled consumer product is against the law.

The name of the recalled product is as follows:

John Deere X300, X300R and X304 series tractors

There is an estimated 36,500 such tractors currently in the U.S. market. The manufacturer of the engine is Kawasaki Motors Corp., USA of Grand Rapids, Mich.

More particularly, the product defects originate in the cooling fan on the top, front of the mounted Kawasaki engine which can break. Should this cooling fan not be operational, the engine overheats, such that the surrounding plastic melts, creating the risk of residential and commercial fires and serious catastrophic injuries.

Today, there are 163 reported product failures, with 83 associated reports of melted engines or engine fires and one report of a burn injury following a fan fire.

The recall encompasses John Deere X300, X300R and X304 Select Series™ Lawn Tractors with Kawasaki FS541V engines. These engines were manufactured between September, 2010 and July, 2011 within the following serial number ranges listed here:
