Ikea Children's Swing Recall

The product liability lawyers at Shoop | A Professional Law Corporation advise of a recent, voluntary product recall involving a defective children's product. IKEA, in conjunction and cooperation with the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission ("CPSC") has issued an urgent product recall for its children's swings due to associated fall and injury hazards.

The date of this voluntary product recall was September 16, 2014, and the Commission has assigned this effort, recall number 14-276. For product identification purposes, the formal name of this defective children's product is the IKEA Gunggung swing set with "child in sling seat."

The product defect associated with the Gunggung child's swing involves the product's suspension fittings, which can break loose, thereby causing a child to slip or fall out of or otherwise fall from the swing. This poses and obvious and unacceptable risk of serious injury to children.

There are currently an estimated 2,000 such units currently in distribution within the United States, and another 300 in Canada. This children's product recall involves the IKEA Gunggung Swing. The Gunggung swing was intended by the manufacturer for both outdoor and indoor use on the part of children ages 3-7. The swing is comprised of a green polyester fabric which hangs from a plastic suspension coupling which is then attached to several steel hooks. The length of this suspension strap (to include the sling seat), is approximately seventeen (17) feet by a width of seat which is nearly a foot. For further product identification purposes, a label is affixed to one of the suspension straps, which displays the age recommendation discussed above (ages 3-7). The label additionally includes the recognizable, IKEA logo, coupled with Gunggung article no. 302.439.74. The supplier no. is 17915.

There have already been multiple reports from the field of product failure and resulting injuries to children. In a recent incident, the suspension fittings broke while in use and the incident resulted in a child falling from the swing and sustaining a fractured leg. CPSC advises consumers to take down the swing set immediately to prevent further use by and injury to children. These items were sold at retail in IKEA stores nationwide and additionally sold online at from dates ranging from approximately June of 2014 to August of 2014. These recalled products sold for $20. They were Imported by IKEA North America Services of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania and manufactured in Vietnam.
