More Than 29 Million IKEA Dressers Recalled After Children Fatalities

A recall and new legislation has been forced after a 22-month-old boy in Minnesota was killed after an IKEA “Malm” dresser fell on top of him. The child was taking a nap when his mother says she had been continually checking on him every few minutes, and on her last check-in, she noticed her son was not in his bed and that the dresser had tipped over.

This most recent death is one of three children who were crushed under the chest in the past two years from the same dresser. The Malm dresser is one of IKEA’s most popular products – an estimated 65 million units have been sold worldwide in the past 13 years.

According to a report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the dressers pose a severe threat to children because the dressers can topple over if they are not securely anchored to walls. CPSC also reported that this most recent recall is the largest furniture safety recall in American history. The recall includes six different Malm models that were manufactured between 2002 and 2016.
