THE PRODUCT
Medtronic's VenaSeal Closure System ("VenaSeal System") is designed to effect a permanent treatment of varicose veins on the legs by essentially "sealing" these various veins which are the closest to the skin surface (superficial varicose veins). This VenaSeal System treatment utilizes a cyanoacrylate-based adhesive and additionally consists of the use of a guidewire, a dispenser gun, catheter, guide, as well as syringes.
How does it work?
A physician will insert the catheter through the skin and directly into the affected varicose vein by injecting a clear liquid. Thereafter, the physician will then monitor the catheter's placement and subsequent injection of the adhesive using ultrasound (sonogram imaging). When the adhesive is then injected into the varicose vein, the area is manually compressed and the adhesive will transform to a solid to then seal the varicose vein.
Some patients have experienced serious issues and complications subsequent to this procedure.
CURRENT LITIGATION STATUS
As of 2026, lawsuits involving the VenaSeal Closure System remain active in federal courts across the country. Plaintiffs allege that the device's cyanoacrylate-based adhesive caused allergic reactions, blood clots, and other complications, and that Medtronic did not adequately warn patients or physicians of these risks.
No multidistrict litigation (MDL) has been formed for VenaSeal claims, and no global settlement has been reached. Medtronic has not issued a formal FDA recall, and the device remains on the market and in use by physicians nationwide. Because filing deadlines vary by state, anyone who experienced complications after a VenaSeal procedure should speak with an attorney as soon as possible to understand their options.
