Fire at Westlake Senior Facility

On Monday, October 10, 2016, five (5) senior adults suffered smoke inhalation related injuries as well as extensive burn injuries during the course of a high-rise, residential apartment complex fire in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.

According to Los Angeles County Fire Department spokespeople, this fire erupted and was initially reported around 8:45 p.m. at the fifteen (15) story residential tower in the 400 block of South Union Avenue, Flames were reported at the outset as emanating from the structure’s fourth floor. The building contains approximately two-hundred units.

Of those multiple injuries, three (3) individuals were hospitalized in critical condition, while two (2) others were hospitalized in serious condition, L.A. County Fire reported. Officials initially made clear that these multiple injuries were related to smoke inhalation and burns.

The senior care facility in Westlake provides housing for those 62 years of age and older, as well as those with disabilities, according to records from the Los Angeles County Housing Authority. Approximately 150 firefighters responded to the fire and suppressed the fire by about 9:30 p.m. The cause of this fire is currently under investigation.
