Patient Side Effects Led the FDA to Issue a Warning Against Using Essure

Essure was a device sold to women as a permanent birth control solution. The treatment used flexible inserts that were inserted in the fallopian tubes. Scar tissue would form around these devices and block ovulation. Essure was originally manufactured by Conceptus, Inc., which is was acquired by Bayer in 2013.

Many women opted to use Essure because of the purported low risk levels and high effectiveness. However, women and their physicians reported the product to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after Essure caused serious health issues. In most instances, women reported symptoms that were not found or reported by post-approval studies, clinical research, labeling, or literature. This means the product may not have been researched or tested thoroughly prior to distribution for consumer use.

If You Used Essure, You Are at Risk

Essure was finally pulled from shelves, effective at the end of 2019, but nearly 20,000 women who used the device elected for an expensive removal surgery due to the severity of their side effects. This is despite Bayer’s promises the product was a surgery-free alternative for birth control.

Because Essure was never meant to be removed, surgeons tasked with helping these women face an uphill battle. The coils, which had to be small to fit inside the fallopian tubes, have also proven very fragile and prone to breakage. Some of them migrated to other parts of women’s bodies such as the bladder, uterus, or colon, and caused damage there.

Unfortunately for the women who paid thousands of dollars to have Essure removed, the symptoms they were experiencing did not always disappear afterward. The FDA has asked Bayer to conduct a study to learn more about these unexpected side effects, but so far, the company has not found a way to reverse side effects for those women who are still suffering. In the case of 48 women who died because of Essure, no study can come close to comforting their survivors after this loss.
