Revision Surgery Involving the DePuy ASR Devices

These DePuy ASR hip replacements which are presently subject to the Depuy Hip recall are the ASR Hip Resurfacing System as well as the ASR XL Acetabular System. DePuy ASR implant devices have been used in patients within the United States Since 2005.

Prior to the DePuy hip recall of the ASR hip systems, published articles detailed the design-related issues with this implant device. Several hundreds of Adverse Event Reports to the FDA Maude Database in the United States confirmed what the studies clearly demonstrated.

The associated problems are categorized by multiple symptoms which include, but are not limited to:

Fractures
Infectious process
Noises emanating from implant such as popping or crunching sounds
Sensation that the hip is not "in place"
Inability to perform physical activity
A marked increase in metabolic activity in the implant area
Dislocation and/or popping free from joint
Pain and swelling in the hip, groin, leg, or lower back
Metallosis (increased build up of metallic debris in the soft tissue)
Heightened levels of metal in the bloodstream
Bone erosion due to an excess of osteoclasts

While some of these symptoms can occur shortly after the device is implanted, others may take years to occur.

Unfortunately, an unacceptable number of DePuy ASR recall patients have required and undergone a very painful surgery known as 'revision surgery' due to this devastating pain they experience when the implant fails. This potentially risky revision surgery removes and replaces the failed DePuy ASR device and replaces it with a properly functioning device.

DePuy has stated that it expects nearly 10,000 patients will require revision surgery. This seems to be a significant underestimation, however; as the device is prone to an unprecedented and unacceptable failure rate for hip replacement implant components.

Allegations regarding the device include radiologic confirmation tending to demonstrate that the DePuy ASR device was failing because it was loosening or separating from the bone, rather than fusing to it. When this happens, patients experience severe and crippling pain as the metal cup moves about the hip socket and rubs against the bone.
