IKEA, the popular do-it-yourself furniture company, has recalled tens of millions of units in recent years.

Below, our Los Angeles product liability attorneys dive into recent IKEA recalls and discuss their implications for consumers.

The MALM Dresser

IKEA North America has issued a recall of 29 million units of inventory—specifically, chests and dressers—that do not comply with industry safety standards.

The affected product in question, the MALM dresser, has been found to become unstable when not anchored to a wall. This defect poses a significant tip-over and entrapment risk for children who may climb on or be near the dresser.

All told, the IKEA recalls encompass the following products:

  • MALM 3-drawer;

  • MALM 4-drawer;

  • MALM 5-drawer; and

  • MALM three 6-drawer models and other such children’s and adult chests and dressers.

Sadly, several children had already been killed as a result of the MALM dresser toppling over before the recall was issued.
