Product Recall Involving Tip-Over Hazard

The product liability attorneys at SHOOP | A PROFESSIONAL LAW CORPORATION write to advise of a recent product safety recall involving approximately 5,000 units of Universal Broadmoore Cayden 9-drawer chests. These products were recalled in conjunction and cooperation with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”).

The hazard associated with these products involve the chests becoming unstable if they are not properly anchored to the wall, thereby posing an unnecessary risk of a tip-over event. These result in entrapment hazards that can result in death or serious injuries to consumers.

The CPSC advises that consumers should immediately cease the use of these recalled chests if they improperly anchored to the wall. They should be placed in an area that is inaccessible to children. Consumers are further instructed to advise the manufacturer of the issue and request a free tip-over restraint kit. Samson, the manufacturer, will provide pre-paid shipping labels so that consumers can remove the product’s drawer slides and return them for a refund. The manufacturer will also provide free of charge, in-home installation of the tip-over restraint kit upon request. Consumers can also return the item to any Costco Warehouse for refund.

For product identification purposes, this recall involves Samson “International’s Universal Broadmoore Cayden Gentleman’s 9-drawer chests. The corresponding model number is M71C3180. These chests are brown in color, measuring approximately 49 inches in height and 55 inches in width. Additionally, a label located at the rear of these recalled products contains “Samson International,” the model number, the date of manufacture, as well as the Costco customer identification number 1335751. The chests are made of wood. Importantly, these recalled units contain manufacturing date codes ranging from September 2019 through November 2019.

With regards to reports of injuries from the field, the manufacturer, Samson International, is in receipt of a report of a tip-over incident involving a 10-year-old child. These units were sold exclusively at Costco Wholesale Warehouses nationally and were additionally sold online at Costco.com from December 2019 through April 2020 for a price point of about $700. These units were manufactured in China.
