Generac Portable Generators Recalled for Finger Amputations

In November 2022, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) again announced the recall of the Generac Portable Generators. This product was previously recalled in July 2021.

The product has been recalled because fingers can be pinched against the frame by an unlocked handle when the generator is being moved. As a result, the dangers and potential injuries include amputation of the finger and crushing of the finger.

There have been 37 reports of injuries, including 24 finger amputations and five finger crushings.

The name of the portable generators are Generac and DR 6500 Watt and 8000 Watt. They are sold at various hardware stores and home improvement stores throughout the country. Some of the sellers include Amazon, Ace Hardware, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s and True Value.

The recall pertains to the 6500-watt and 8000-watt Generac portable generators with unit type numbers XT8000E XT8000EFI, GP6500, GP6500E, GP8000E and HomeLink 6500E portable generators, and DR models PRO 6500M and PRO 6500E portable generators, including purchase dates of July 29, 2021, through November 3, 2022. These generators contain a repair kit with cover handle guards, two wheels and a handle used to move them.

There are approximately 321,160 units, as well as 4,575 units that were sold in Canada.
