Read Mr. Shoop's FOUR GOLDEN RULES OF FIRE SCENE PROCESSING

A colleague within the NFPA Research Committee, M. Ahrens, recently published some incredible statistics regarding home structure fires that are well worth sharing and considering. A close examination of these statistics reveal patterns we should all be aware of with regard to residential fires - a critical step in fire prevention and safety.

A predominating amount of structure fires, fire-related deaths and fire-related burn and smoke inhalation injuries occur in the home. Mr. Athens utilized data points directly from the U.S. Fire Administration's National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) as well as NFPA's fire department experience survey in determining the analysis of frequency, forensic causes as well as the overarching circumstances attendant to home fire causation and losses, which can serve to inform fire prevention efforts nationally - and keep us all safer!

According to internal, NFPA estimates, U.S. fire departments were dispatched and responded to an approximately 358,300 residential fires each year during the period 2010-2014. Significantly, these fires resulted in an estimated (avg.) of about 2,520 civilian deaths, nearly 13,000 civilian injuries, as well as approximately $6.7 billion in damage to property - each year. 70% of these reported, residential fires as well as nearly 84% of these residential fire-related deaths occurred in one or two-family residences (including manufactured homes). The remaining ones occurred within apartment units or other such multiple-family housing structures.

Additionally of note, cooking materials/equipment was, not surprisingly, the leading cause of residential fires and fire-related burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Smoking paraphernalia was a leading cause of residential fire-related fatalities, while 1/4 of residential fire-related deaths were caused by fires with point of origin within the living room, the family room or the den. Yet another 1/4 of fatalities were caused by fires with point of origin within the bedroom. Lastly, about 17% were caused by fires which started within the kitchen area. About 60% of these residential fire-related fatalities deaths resulted from fires wherein no functioning smoke alarms were present. As compared with various, other other age groupings, it appears that older adults were most likely to be killed in a residential fire.
